Pondering Playtime // Tiddler Rainbow Rice Tuff Spot

May 10, 2019

Welcome back to Pondering Playtime, my fortnightly series where I share a favourite picture book and a craft or play activity to go with it. This week, I’ve chosen Tiddler by Julia Donaldson, and channeled my rice-sculpting skills into this fun tuff spot for the girls to play with.

Tiddler – What’s the Story?

Tiddler is about a little fish who is always late, and telling tall tales to explain why. But then one day, Tiddler gets caught up in the nets of a fishing boat, and ends up lost. Can his stories help him to find his way back home?

For this activity, I reused the rainbow rice left over from the rainbow rice tuff spot activity that we did a couple of months ago (you can read about how I dyed the rice in that post). I formed it into two large seaweed shapes, made a little fish out of purple rice and a jellyfish from pink rice, then added a fishing net and stacking cups into the tuff spot. Then, I left the girls to play.

Tiddler Rainbow Rice Tuff Spot – What the girls thought

Tiddler is one of those books that M asks to borrow every other time that we visit the library. We love Julia Donaldson books, and this one is no exception. The stories that Tiddler tells, and the adventure that he goes on, hold M’s attention right to the end.

As for this tuff spot, I think I enjoyed creating it almost as much as the girls enjoyed playing with it! M was absolutely desperate to get started almost from the moment that the first grain of rice hit the tuff spot. She loves sensory activities like this.

B really got stuck in to this tuff spot too. I like dry mess because it means that I’m completely relaxed when my one year old decides to launch herself head first on her belly, into the middle of the tuff tray!

The girls both spent an extended period of time in this tuff spot, filling the stacking cups and pouring the rice. It’s amazing how long such a simple activity can amuse them for! It was lovely watching them play together, taking turns with different cups and working together to fill them up.
