I’ve always generally lived a reasonably healthy existence due to being diagnosed with Polycycstic Kidney Disease (PKD) at the age of eleven. I’ve never smoked, don’t consume much alcohol and on the whole eat a healthy, balanced diet. My diet has probably improved further in the last two years or so since I’ve come to recognise my body’s intolerance to gluten, and started following a gluten free diet.
I’ve talked previously about the importance of taking folic acid when trying to conceive, but I’ve also done a bit of research into sensible foods you can eat when trying for a baby. Obviously following a healthy diet and cutting out the junk will always help you body, but here are some foods that I’ve increased my intake of to help give my fertility an extra ‘boost’ and to create a healthy body for when conception happens:
I’ve also taken care to remove some fish from my diet, such as swordfish and marlin (not so widely available here, but marlin was everywhere when I was on honeymoon!) as they can contain higher levels of mercury which aren’t good for a developing embryo.
I’m fortunate that I don’t need to worry about my weight but I have read that being underweight or overweight can affect ovulation so it’s sensible to adopt a healthy, balanced diet in order to reach and maintain a healthy weight.
Which foods did you eat to help increase your chances of conception? Tell me in the comments below!
