18 Goals for 2018: End of Year Reflection

At the very end of last year I set myself 18 goals to achieve in 2018. Now that we’re very nearly at the end of the year, I thought I’d look through them and see whether I’ve achieved them or not.

1. HAVE A BABY!

B is now nine months old, and really developing into a little person in her own right, rather than being the little crying and pooping machine that babies are! She has been crawling for weeks and is starting to pull herself up to standing. I’m looking forward to watching her continue to grow and learn in 2019.

 2. OVERPAY THE MORTGAGE

We’ve carried on doing this all the way through to the end of the year. It’s only been baby steps (back in January I only overpaid by £5!) but I’ve gradually increased the overpayments and we’ve got used to having less disposable income. Although we’ve still got a lot of years left on our mortgage, and it doesn’t feel like it’s making much of a difference to the really big number left to pay, I know we’ll feel the benefit at the other end of our mortgage term. Overpaying the mortgage is definitely something that I want to continue doing in 2019.

3. LAUNCH A NEW BOOK AND ACTIVITY-RELATED SERIES ON THE BLOG

I’m really proud to have started Pondering Playtime, and I’m even more proud that I’ve managed to keep it going all year! M has loved all of the activities and I’d like to try to increase my Pondering Playtime posts from fortnightly to weekly. It will involve a lot of planning and organisation, but M enjoys the activities that we do together so much, I know that it will be worth it.

4. JOIN IN WITH THE LIVING ARROWS LINKY EVERY WEEK

I’ve linked up to Living Arrows every week all year, and I intend to carry on next year. I enjoy sharing my favourite photos from the week and reflecting on my time with the girls and the things that we’ve done together. This will definitely continue into 2019!

5. LEARN HOW TO USE MY NEW CAMERA

I still haven’t taken my camera off auto. I don’t suppose it will happen any time soon, either! But I have managed to learn a few more of the settings, including how to control it using my phone, so hopefully this skill will continue to develop next year.

6. WORK WITH AT LEAST ONE EXCITING NEW BRAND

I’ve been so fortunate to have worked with some brilliant brands in 2018. The exciting thing about blogging is that you just never know what is around the corner. I’m looking forward to discovering more new brands in 2019! I’m already in discussion with a lovely independent brand about sharing their children’s clothing on Instagram, so do pop over to follow me there, too.

7. TURN THE SPARE ROOM INTO A NURSERY

B has actually moved into her bedroom now, but it’s still a bit of a storage room, to be honest. Our aim for between now and new year is to really sort through it and get it lovely and tidy for her. Wish us luck!

8. SORT OUT MY MATERNITY ALLOWANCE

Maternity Allowance feels like a distant memory, now! My maternity leave is well and truly over, and I’m officially a stay at home parent. Which I intend to fully make the most of next year!

9. READ A BOOK FOR PLEASURE

I still haven’t read anything else since reading (Affiliate link) before B was born, (*Affiliate link). However, Matthew and I received lots of books for Christmas, so I’m hoping to carve out a little bit of reading time in 2019.

Of course, I read children’s books with the girls all the time, which does bring me pleasure, but it’s not the same as getting stuck into a really meaty story.

10. DECLUTTER

I’m still very much in the toddler-enforced decluttering cycle! M has a really deep built-in wardrobe in her bedroom, which I ended up decluttering the other week because she decided that a pram I’d stored in the corner of her bedroom was scaring her, and needed to be put away. I realised as I was emptying out said cupboard, that we’d actually just shoved random things in there when M was a newborn, and actually most of it turned out to be empty boxes, bags and packaging. Obviously we couldn’t find our way downstairs to the recycling bin whilst navigating through the fog that is first time parenthood!

Slowly, the house is getting to where I want it to be, which has been helped immeasurably by hiring a cleaner. Our cleaner is fantastic and having her has allowed me to focus on the less essential areas of the house that need sorting, tidying and cleaning, and our home is feeling so much better for it.

11. GET IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA

I’m proud to say that this is something I think I’ve really embraced in 2018. I even jumped at the chance to have a family photo shoot, and absolutely adored the results! I’d definitely have another. Other than that, I’ve become more of a selfie-taker and have been putting my face out there more on my Instagram grid, and I talk to camera a little more on my Instastories. I’d call that a success!

12. GET OUT OF THE HOUSE MORE

I still have a little way to go with this, as I get a bit too anxious about going to some places on my own with the girls. I have been brave, though, and a couple of weeks ago I started attending a local Bounce and Rhyme group that I’d heard about but not been to before. I’ll definitely be going back with the girls when it restarts in the New Year.

13. HAVE MY HAIR CUT REGULARLY

I’ve stuck to this, too, and have started making my next appointment before I leave the hairdressers after my cut. I feel much better for it, although the postpartum hair loss regrowth is in full swing now, and making me look a bit scrappy. I’ve just got to ride it out, I suppose!

14. PAY OFF THE CAR FINANCE

This was ticked off the list back in March, and I still don’t regret doing it. We still have one car on finance, but it’s 0% so we’re not concerned about that. It’s nice to know that whatever happens, we have our second car to fall back on. And even nicer having a bit more disposable income each month (which I am naturally diverting a chunk of to overpaying the mortgage)!

15.  GET ORGANISED

I think, right now, I’m feeling the least organised that I have all year. I think this is because we’re right in the middle of that strange week between Christmas and New Year, where no one knows what day it is! I need to crack open my 2019 diary and get some plans in there!

16. BE MORE PRESENT

I keep having to remind myself to do this. I find myself with my phone in my hand far too much, still. But, in my defence, most of the time it’s because I’m using it to take photos of whatever it is that we’re doing. I think I just worry about what other people perceive when they see me with my phone in my hand, which I’m sure would be different to what they’d perceive if it were my camera in my hand, even though I’m doing the same thing. Perhaps one of my goals for 2019 needs to be to care less about what other people might be thinking about me!

17. BOOK A HOLIDAY

We had a lovely weekend away at Center Parcs during October half term. So much so, that we’ve already booked another one for the first half of next year! It’s so nice having something to look forward to. It’s just a weekend, but still, it’s lovely knowing that we’ve got some special time together coming up.

18. BE KIND TO MYSELF

I think this is always going to be something I’ll find difficult to achieve. I’m too much of a perfectionist and find it a struggle if I feel like I’ve done something wrong – no matter how small. I’ve definitely been calmer and felt happier this past year than I have in previous ones, in large part because I’m content now that we’ve completed our family, with the arrival of B.

    Gosh I can relate to several of these goals! Reading for one, and being IN FRONT of the camera! It’s reassuring to know I’m not the only one that has these thoughts. I’m going to take a leaf out of your book this year and give myself a few (achievable) goals this year. It’s certainly time I got some ‘me time’. #ShareYourYear

    I love your reflections! It’s lovely to read. Getting out the house with two is a job and a half! We do manage to get out quite often, but only with the baby in the carrier, I can’t cope with the pram and the toddler as sometimes I need both hands with her! x

      Oh yes I know what you mean! I tend to utilise the carrier a lot too, although if we are going on a longer trip out, then I prefer to use the double pram, and keep M contained in that! x

    Love these reflections, I can relate to a lot of them too. As Freddie is only a baby I made a habit of staying in to make sure he had his naps and didn’t venture out too much at the end of last year. I need to change that so will get regular walking into the daily routine. I’m going to write a goals post for 2019 as I’m inspired to look back at the end of the year to see what we’ve achieved.

    I love the idea of writing an actual check list so it can be looked back on. Sad to see that you didn’t find time to be kind to yourself. I think so many of us struggle with that. I am going to try and do it for just five minutes a day in the hope that I can fit that in. Even if it means I just drink a hot cup of tea I am going to consider that a win!

      Hmm, I think I perhaps mean ‘be kind to myself’ differently to the way you have interpreted it. I did manage to make time to have my nails done a couple of times, had my hair dyed and even managed to have a massage. But by ‘be kind to myself’ I actually meant to be kind to myself mentally. I have a terrible habit of assuming that people are thinking the worst of me, which of course they never are (at least I hope they aren’t!) and I tend to tie myself in knots over it. This is definitely something that I still need to work on in 2019!

    I’ve loved reading about your year – Its always a win when your goal list ticks off ‘having a baby’ (who is gorgeous by the way!). I hope you become less anxious about going out with your girls during 2019 – I used to be anxious about being home alone with mine. Isn’t it funny how the human mind works?       Thank you. I’m hoping my anxiety will improve – I think I just need to go to places that will be busier with people, so that I feel safer. Unfortunately there have been a couple of incidents at a beautiful lake, which is right on our doorstep, so I just don’t feel safe taking there girls there by myself. Even though the risk is incredibly low (probably no greater than anywhere else!). I hope you have a wonderful 2019, too x

    This is a great way to look back over the year and to see what you have actually accomplished. We always set goals for ourselves and know that some are impossible but we put them there anyway because we want to change our outlook, you have achieved so many of your goals. Hope you have an amazing 2019!

    I love this format of post. I actually did publish some goals at the start of the year but I don’t think I once looked back at them, I should do that!
    You did incredibly well, especially as 18 goals is a lot anyway! Yay to more books for Christmas 🙂

      I think it helped that I set achievable goals, and scheduled regular update posts to keep myself accountable.

  9. 18 goals sounds like a lot to me, so well done on achieving very nearly all of them! I can totally relate to your goal of stepping in front of the camera more often. My face used to never show on my social media feeds, and I’ve made a conscious effort last year to ask my husband to take photos of me, and we also had a family photo shoot.

    It sounds like you’ve done a fantastic job of meeting the majority of her goals in 2018. And you’ve just inspired me to pay an extra £50 off our mortgage – I’m definitely going to try and do it more this year. 2018 was the year I started to read again and I’m enjoying it so much – I hope you manage to read more in 2019 too 🙂 #ShareYourYear

      I’m glad I’ve inspired you! I try not to think about the ‘big’ number that is our mortgage balance, and instead focus on the interest that we’ll be saving ourselves in the long run. It makes it all feel a lot more manageable! x
